Vocabulary
Hierarchy (n): 1- a system in which people or things are arranged according to their importance.
E.g.: Some monkeys have a very complex social hierarchy.
E.g.: He rose quickly through the political hierarchy to become party leader.
E.g.: He rapidly rose in the corporate hierarchy.
Hierarchical (adj): 1- arranged according to people’s or things’ level of importance, or relating to such a system.
E.g.: The military has a hierarchical rank structure.
E.g.: It’s a very hierarchical organization in which everyone’s status is clearly defined.
State-Owned Enterprise (n): 1- a company owned by the government.
E.g.: China Unicom is a state-owned enterprise.
Rigid (adj): 1- not flexible or unlikely to change.
E.g.: State-owned enterprises tend to have a more rigid and hierarchical structure.
Gap year (n): 1- a year between leaving school and starting university that is usually spent travelling or working:
E.g.: I didn’t take a gap year. Did you?
E.g.: Raph took a gap year after high school to volunteer in Indonesia.
