Homework

Prepare to talk about your meeting with your new German colleague.

Vocabulary

On the cutting edge – to help a new field to develop, to be an innovator
e.g. Big data is on the cutting edge of marketing.

Working Knowledge of something – to know enough to be able to work on/with something
e.g. I am trying to develop a working knowledge of data science for my new job. It would be very useful for me.
— Use verbs like: Develop or get

Come to believe – to realize, to develop an idea, find an opportunity
e.g. I have come to believe that I will never be good at the trumpet.
e.g. I have come to believe that big data will be a key collaborator for the SFA products department.

Grammar

I have experience in [what] for the past 15 years
— The first is about what you got from doing something; what do you know from working? (What?)
— The second is about how long you have been working with these things (How long?)
e.g. I have experience in [what].
e.g. I have worked in/with [what] for fifteen years.

Have vs. Used to
— “Have” is used to talk about something in the past that is related to “now”
e.g. I have been an English teacher for 3 months (and I still am).
— “Used to” is about something that happened in the past, but not now, and we aren’t telling you about the beginning or the end; you did it more than once
e.g. I used to play baseball (sometime in the past, regularly)
— “Used to doing” is also something that you do frequently, or which is not hard for you anymore because you have done it a lot
e.g. I am used to drinking coffee (I do this regularly)
e.g. I am used to working long hours (this is normal now)
— In the first use of “used,” the next verb is normal (used to play, used to drink, used to do), but with the second use of “used,” the next verb is with “-ing,” to show that something was going on, happening, keeping on

Writing exercise

Let me introduce myself briefly. After I graduated from University with a degree in computer science, I entered the workforce and started working as a programmer for several years. I have experience in IT software ã€Data Baseã€Data security and related application fields for the past 15 years. I used to work for HP, Oracle, and Microsoft , the focused role is to be a salesã€project manager and Security Consultant. Four years ago , I had the opportunity to access the knowledge of Big Data, and Big Data was popular at the time, so I entered the first big data management school in Taiwan to study and got a master degree. Fortunately, I am able to enter Nielsen this year. I have been working at Nielsen for three months and I am still in the learning stage. I am very interested in every step of data processing and I want to explore it deeply. Maybe this is also part of my personality, I especially like fancy knowledge. In data science, I have a little understanding of the sampling methodology of Nielsen’s product development. I am also trying to understand the factors of some feasibility check, ex. RSE , coop rate, and so on. I hope that I can normally understand the working knowledge of data science. After taking over the SFA products, I believe that there are many opportunities to collaborate with the data science team, so I would like to get some advice from you. For example, what knowledge must be learned first that it can help me working more smoothly with your team?
