Homework

Either write or prepare a speaking on your interview question.

BONUS: use “heads up,” “input,” and “feedback”

Vocabulary

EEG – a way to measure the electrical activity in your brain

Wisdom – knowledge that comes from long experience
e.g. Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
Courage to change the things I can,
And wisdom to know the difference.
— It takes experience to know which things you can or cannot change.

Tactful – knowing how to say things and how to manage your emotions to avoid making difficult situations worse, or to communicate effectively
e.g. Mark hasn’t been performing well at work recently, but we know that his wife is sick. So, as his manager, I will have to be tactful when I address it with him.

Heads up – to pay attention, to watch out

Insight – when you get to the heart a matter and understand it very  clearly
e.g. Newton’s greatest insight was the relationship between force, mass, and acceleration. F = MA!
e.g. We need to gather the clients’ insights on effective teaching (we need to ask the students what they like about teaching, because they are the ones who really know what they want)

Input vs. Feedback – input is what you put in a process (iron to make metal products; teachers and money for training); feedback is a result that has some effect
— “Input” is from the outside to the inside
— “Feedback” is from the end back to another part of the process
— When working as a group: input is inside the team working on the plans; feedback comes from the end user

Grammar

“One of” refers to a group, but as individuals, so the title needs to be plural:
e.g. one of the doctors
e.g. one of the lawyers

Tense is about when something is happening.
Completion is about whether it is finished.
— When we talk about have/had, that is tense.
— When we talk about negotiated/negotiating, that is completion.

Writing exercise

I think the wisdom of the interaction with people is the most challenging at work. When I grouped new shanghai trainer team, One of trainer, Esther has strong network in the fitness industry. Also, she is knowledgeable enough and accumulated experiences in fitness, dance and performance to make the program better. I’ve negotiated the contract with her for nearly 2 months. She requested to have more flexibility on her working time and higher salary beyond our budget. From my perspective, I had to consider team management and annual budget. Originally we were stuck at the situation and I almost gave up but after more and deeper communication, her true insight is that she has to support her family. Also, her grandma was sick so she had to fly back and forth between Taipei and Shanghai. Finally, she said yes to sign the contract. I realized if I insist what the result I expect and really listen other people thoughts, most of feedbacks and results are positive

I think the wisdom of the interaction with ability to tactfully interact with people is the most challenging aspect of being a manager at work. When I grouped was creating a new shanghai trainer team, I found that one of the trainers, Esther, has strong network in the fitness industry. Also, she is quite / very knowledgeable enough and has accumulated many related experiences in fitness, dance, and performance to make improve the program better. I had been negotiating the contract with her for nearly 2 months. She requested to have more flexibility in her working time schedule and higher a salary beyond our budget. From my perspective, I had to consider / balance team management and annual budget. Originally we were stuck at the situation and I almost gave up. But, though I was frustrated, I continued talking with her. I tried to make it clear how much we wanted to collaborate with her, and she finally opened up. after more and deeper communication, her true insight primary concern / worry / preoccupation is that she has to support her family. Also, she needed extra flexibility because her grandma was sick so she had to fly back and forth between Taipei and Shanghai. FinallyWith this new understandingwe were able to come to an agreement and she said yes to sign the contract. I realized that if I insist what the result am straightforward about what I need / expect (my limitations) and my passion and really listen other people‘s thoughts / needs / situation, most of the feedback and results are positive.**

** Together we can achieve great things.
