VIP Class Notes (Nick) [S]

Homework

Write about the next campaign, or if there is no new campaign yet, write about what you do outside of work.
Try to make longer sentences by adding pieces (why? when? where? with who?), or by adding adjectives to the subject or object.

Vocabulary

Report vs. Write a report – I think “report” as a verb is usually spoken, given orally; to “write a report” makes it clearer that it’s a formal, written report.
e.g. I often have meetings with my boss to report on the campaign (you may bring written materials, but it’s mostly a discussion)
e.g. The UN releases many reports on human rights and poverty.

Periodically – happening regularly, a set amount of time; once a week, twice a week, once a month, etc.
e.g. We will meet periodically to review your work on the campaign.

Speak vs. Say – speak is just to make sound with your mouth, the action of talking; to “say” is to use a language to express something.
e.g. It was quiet, and then he spoke.
e.g. Can you speak, or is something wrong with your voice?
e.g. How do you say that in English?
e.g. He said to me: “How do you make baozi?”

In charge of – to be responsible for; to have the authority to tell people what to do on a project (charge is like 权)
e.g. Zuley was in charge of the WeChat and Weibo parts of the campaign.

Involved in – to help with, but not to have the authority to make decisions about something
e.g. I have been involved in a campaign to popularize this face mask.

Grammar

Subject + Verb + Object + Extra information
主语 + 动词 + 宾语 +(跟谁,在哪儿, etc.)
Instead of writing more sentences, you can put information into the same sentence by including it the “extra information,” or by making it an adjective that describes the subject or object.
e.g. I sell masks. The masks are for cleaning your face. We sold them on 11/11. = We sold face-cleaning masks on 11/11 (“face-cleaning” is an adjective for the object, “masks,” and “on 11/11” is extra information about when you did it)
