Vocabulary

Lesson – to learn something specific, usually from something that did not go as planned; a class on something specific
e.g. Today we will have a lesson on the past tense.
e.g. What are the lessons we have learned from the last six months?

Chief – the highest leader (cheef)
e.g. The “C” level in our company stands for “Chief”: CEO, COO, CFO, etc.
Chef – a skilled cook (sheff)
e.g. When she was young, she always wanted to be a chef because she loved to cook.

Get drunk – 喝醉

Open – someone without secrets, who likes to talk and make friends, someone who is not shy
Social – someone who likes to be around other people, to talk to others

Introvert (noun) – someone who wants to be alone when they are tired (adj – introverted)
Extrovert (noun) – someone who feels more energetic with other people, who likes to relax with company (adj – extroverted)

Hangover (noun)- when your head hurts and your stomach feels bad the morning after drinking too much (adj – hungover)
e.g. What will you do to deal with your hangover the morning after the big celebration?
e.g. Boy, I feel awfully hungover today.

Call in sick (verb) – when you call work in the morning and tell your colleagues that you can’t come in that day because you are not feeling well; usually unplanned
e.g. I had to call in sick to work today because I threw up this morning.
Sick leave / sick day (noun) – to not come to work because you are sick
e.g. Today I had to use some of my sick leave because I am too sick to work.
Take (m.w.) leave (verb） – to not come to work; usually planned
e.g. I’m going to take some leave in August to travel to Thailand – I’m going to take a week (of leave) in August to travel to Thailand – I’m going to take two days’ leave in August

Revitalize – to give something new life or energy (re = again; vita = life; -ize = to do)

Drunk means 喝醉 – Drunk in Chinese is 喝醉
— “Mean” is talking about a definition, not a translation
— “Is” is used when the other person already knows what you are talking about, they just don’t know what the word to explain it is.
e.g. “Drunk” means that you have had something to drink that makes your head feel funny (explaining, giving detail)

It’s traditional now – It’s a (company) tradition now
— “Traditional” is more about what all of society does
— Groups of people just have “traditions”

Pronunciation

fine – be careful not the separate the “a” and “ee” sounds in the long “I”

Fun – “u” is the sound you make if you don’t do anything with your mouth
