Vocabulary

Stalactite – in a cave, a pointy piece of rock hanging from the ceiling
Stalagmite – in a cave, a pointy piece of rock coming up from the floor
e.g. These form by dripping water, usually in pairs. Eventually, the pair is united in one column.

Limestone – a rock with lots of calcium (CA) in it

Acid – p.H < 7
Base – p.H > 7

Thorn – a pointy part on a flower or other plant, like on a rose

Tolerance – your ability to stand / put up with something

Mild / Medium / Spicy / Very Spicy – 微辣,中辣,重辣,”爆辣”

Middle vs. Medium – noun vs. adjective (usually); “middle” is used in adverbial phrases
e.g. I am sitting in the middle (this describes where I am sitting)
e.g. What size do you want? How about a medium (shirt, fry, coke)

Salivate – when your mouth starts to water 流口水

Pepper – general term for fruits with a waxy skin, usually green, yellow, or red, with some with white parts and seeds inside
Bell Pepper – 青椒
Hot Pepper – any type of pepper which is spicy 辣椒

Skinny – much longer than wide; not fat
e.g. Thai peppers are skinnier than most Mexican peppers

Prefecture – 地级市

Offense / Defense – attacking or trying to score points; trying to stop an attacker or stop another team from scoring

Laces – something tying something shut, like on shoes or a baseball

Contact – when two things are touching
e.g. I don’t like basketball because there is too much contact between the players / because it is a contact sport.

Tackle – to hit someone with your whole body and bring them to the ground
e.g. Every time that someone is tackled in American football, the play stops.
