Vocabulary

Thermostat – how you control the temperature in a room or house
e.g. The thermostat in this room doesn’t really work if the main control isn’t making cold air.

Bloom – when a plant grows flowers, or when flowers open
e.g. My tree is blooming / flowering again because it’s so warm!

Environment – what is around you, especially nature
e.g. I really like the environment at this company.
e.g. Industry is often bad for the (natural) environment.

Bellboy / Bellhop / Steward – someone at a hotel who helps guests with their luggage
e.g. The bellhop will bring your luggage up to your room.

Cargo – when you transport lots of thing, usually on trucks, on ships, or in planes
e.g. A lot of cargo comes into China through Shanghai.

Catch vs. Get – catch is when something is trying to escape; get is the change from don’t have to have
e.g. My son tried to get away and climb the tree, but I caught him.
e.g. I went to get some water (the water isn’t running away).

High Altitude Sickness – when you go up in the mountains and it makes you feel sick

On Second Thought – after thinking about something again, I have changed my mind; I have decided I will do something else
— It usually means that you learned something you don’t like.
e.g. On second thought, I don’t really want this sandwich. I didn’t realize it would have wasabi on it.

Sinus – the places in your nose where you can feel wasabi; where your face hurts when you have a cold and can’t blow your nose
e.g. I have a terrible headache because my sinuses hurt.

Grammar

Passive voice
When you don’t want to focus on who is doing something, then you can use the structure: “to be + verb + ed”
e.g. Dinner is served (I’m not telling you who served it, because it’s only important that dinner is ready to eat)

I extremely slept in – I slept in extremely late / I slept a very long time
