Vocabulary

Valkyrie – a mythical female character in Norse mythology who chooses who will live or die in battle
e.g. The Valkyrie is famous from a piece by Richard Wagner.

Put someone in their place – to show them that they aren’t as important as they think
e.g. He wanted me to write the report, but I put him in his place! That’s not my job!

Deck – playing cards, or some group of them
Hand – the cards from the deck (or your deck) that you have ready to use

Beat-down – to hit someone until they are on the ground
e.g. I tell you what, he really got a beat-down! He had to stay in bed for a week.

Tank – a large metal vehicle with a big gun and treads instead of wheels; a character that can take a lot of damage before dying
e.g. The Giant is a tank card.

Cycle – something that has a circular pattern
e.g. The water cycle shows how water evaporates, rains, and moves back to the ocean.

Evaporate – when a liquid becomes a gas

Blizzard – a large snow storm; a game company

Grammar

By yourself – alone / on your own / yourself
e.g. I am eating by myself (alone)
e.g. Should I help you drive there? I can do it on my own (without help).
e.g. Do it yourself! I won’t!

The passive voice is a way to avoid saying who will do something, or how it will happen.
e.g. Your head will be broken.
— Better to say: You will break your head!

Pronunciation

Gem – make sure it’s a short “e” not an “ee”
e.g. Like in “them”
