Vocabulary

Policy – plans for what you want to do

Parliamentary – vote for parties who choose the prime minister

House of Representatives / Delegates – usually the “lower” house, with more people
Senate – usually the “upper” house, with fewer people
Legislature – the people who have the final power to approve
Legislator – one person in the Legislature

Term – the period that someone is in power

Mindset / Worldview – how you approach something; what you think the world is like, how you view it

Hong Konger

Waiter – someone who serves you food

Kicks – shoes
e.g. Look at my new kicks!

Grammar

Choose, Chose, Chosen

I saw how is Shanghai – I saw what Shanghai is like

So vs. Such
— So is only used with adjectives or adverbs; use “such” for nouns
The Americans and English are not so friends – They aren’t such great friends


Should vs. Supposed to

In the past:

I should have gone to the store
— I needed to go for my own needs, and regret not doing it.
I was supposed to go to the store
— Unfulfilled plan
— Someone else told me to

In the present:

I am supposed to go home at nine.
— Should, because someone expects me to be there
— I usually do, or I plan to do
I should go home.
— This is better than staying.

In the future:
“Supposed to” cannot be used in the future.
I should go home at nine.
— Speaking generally
— You might have to do something there
