Vocabulary
Jaw – the lower part of you mouth, the bone your lower teeth grow from
Statue – a piece of art made from something like stone, wood, plastic, and which is 3D; it is the same shape as what it is supposed to look like (not flat, like a painting)
e.g. “David” is a famous statute by Michelangelo.
Pun – a joke which uses similar-sounding words to confuse meanings
— In modern family, the dog statue was named “Barkley.” On one hand, this is a real name. On the other hand, “bark” is the word for the loud sounds that dogs make.
Tractor – a vehicle you use on the farm to harvest your crops, to turn over the dirt, to plant seeds; also, the part of a “semi-truck” that has the engine.
e.g. In Modern Family, Phil doesn’t want to confess that the picture is his, because it would be embarrassing.
Butler – a butler is usually a man who works in your house to answer the door, answer the phone, manage the hiring of other employees
Spooked – to be scared, like by a ghost
Premier (noun) – the first time that something is seen
e.g. The show premiered on September 30th, 2015.
e.g. The movie premier will happen next Saturday, November 4th.
Premier (noun) – something that is the best, or which is used to represent a place, like a city
e.g. The Oriental Pearl is Shanghai’s premier attraction.
e.g. This is one of Shanghai’s premier restaurants.
Attribute (verb) – to call something the cause of something else
e.g. The increased earnings this year was attributed to a more experienced sales team (it was the team that caused the success)
Attribute (noun) – a feature or characteristic
e.g. His most prominent attribute is his nose.
Pronunciation
Luke – careful between “look” and “Luke”; these are long and short “oo” sounds
Phil – this is a “short I” sound; distinguish “Phil” and “feel”
Mad – distinguish “d” and “t”; the only difference is “voice”
Haley – long “a,” as in “age”
Journal / General – jer – nul; jen -er -ul
Statue – this is a short “a,” as in “apple”
Butler – be careful not add sound between the “t” and “l”
Sad – careful not to confuse it with “sat”
Attribute – a – tri – byoot (noun), uh – tri – byoot (verb)
