I am very sorry I haven’t been chatting with you for the past few months. I am about to pick up a new job and lead a team. I want you to give me some advice.

  1. You know…there are lots of exciting changes happening for both of us professionally and personally. And I am personally very excited about the move to Shanghai, and I’m especially excited that you will be living and working here in Shanghai as well.
  2. Firstly, I’m excited because we haven’t been able to connect very much over the past few months. So I am just eager to get to know you a bit more.
  3. But maybe more importantly, I am excited to be able to learn from you and perhaps learn how I can best assist you in your work here in Shanghai. I hope and I will try to be a good resource for you professionaly within Neilsen and also as a Chinese person — I want you to know that if you have any troubles inside or outside the work place such as adapting to your new life in China, don’t hesitate to reach out to me — I’d love to help you anyway I can.
  4. I am very excited about my future here at Neilsen. I have been in this industry for nearly 15 years and I have always been challenged to grow as a professional and expand my knoweldge of the industry.
  5. I am really looking forward to applying some of my more technical expertise in data analysis to Neilsen’s objectives in consumer and market research.

How has your transition to Shanghai been so far?

Have you experienced any culture shock yet?

Are you interested in learning any Chinese? You know I have private English lessons every week, but I would be interested to learn some German words!

Your famliy is so young — what are your girls thinking? Are they more excited or more afraid of the move to Shanghai?

“I think international families have very interesting lives. The change in the beginning is sometimes difficult, but international children usually have very interesting lives.”

Have you chosen a school for your 6-year old? I assume Neilsen gave you some recommendations for schools, but if you need help here, I have many friends in Shanghai who can help.

Also, just a suggestion, many international families will employ an “ayi” to help around their home — maybe this is something you and your wife can consider…

You know I am new to Neilsen, I’ve only been at the company for 4 months, do you have any advice for me to be an effective 有效 team member or just any advice generally? I want to do a good job.

I used to be a sales manager. I had worked for ORacle and HP for ten years in Taiwan. I left my company due to political issues. I think American companies are very political.
