When Lolo ZouaĆÆā€™s team booked her first tourā€”a quick spin through Paris, London, Toronto, New York, and Los Angelesā€”she was convinced no one would show up. Not only did every show sell out, she was stunned to see girls in the crowd already wearing her signature look: oversize hoops and a beret.

That was less than a year ago, and while the 23-year-old musician is still shocked by her soaring popularity (her breakout hit, ā€œHigh Highs to Low Lows,ā€ has 6.7 million hits and counting on Spotify) and the thousands of Instagram fans she gains on a daily basis, her rapid success isnā€™t a happy coincidence. In fact, ZouaĆÆ has spent years preparing for this moment, first by quietly working behind the scenes with other artists, like H.E.R., and then by gradually building a social media following. Thatā€™s where her unique style comes into play: Before sheā€™d released a single song, young women and men were already double-tapping photos of her pastel hair and sexy-tomboy mix of thrifted NASCAR jackets, high-rise jeans, and Dr. Martens. When she visited Vogueā€™s offices last month, she was wearing a variation on that uniform: an oversize hoodie, vintage camouflage jacket, and, of course, a beret and hoops.

ā€œIā€™ve pretty much had the same style since I was 16,ā€ she said. ā€œIā€™m upgrading it a bit now, though. I just started wearing blazers, which I love. Iā€™m slowly maturing!ā€ ZouaĆÆ spent a few years in Nashville (including a single semester in college), where she found much of her current wardrobe at Music City Thrift. Now she prefers the Goodwill in Queens. ā€œI like stores that arenā€™t curated,ā€ she explained. ā€œTheyā€™re just expensive, and theyā€™ve already done my job for me. Thrifting is one of my only other hobbies, and I like to do it alone. Itā€™s my time to relax.ā€
