Continue reading, writing and speaking exercises. I used TED-Ed videos as prompts for reading comprehension and writing. We also used the NY Times learning network (https://www.nytimes.com/section/learning) for reading and speaking practice. Henry’s a strong writer!

Vocabulary

“In those days…” = a long time ago…this happened.

e.g. When your parents were children, in those days, they didn’t have cell phones.

e.g. The teacher was talking about life before cell phones. In those days, ______________.

Henry completing the sentence above: In those days, they didn’t have cell phones and they could not take to eachother easily.

visible 可见 = you can see it

e.g. Henry’s glasses are visible to me. I can see them.

e.g. The radio sound is invisible — I cannot see it.

influence 影响 = does it make you want to do something

e.g. Parents influence their children to help them make good decisions.

e.g. Teachers influence their students so that they can study hard.

e.g. Our friends have a big influence on us. You know, if my friends have a cool new iPhone, maybe I want one too. Because they are influencing me.

according to = what did this person or this video or this thing say about something…

e.g. If we went to the moon, according to this video, will it be easy or difficult?

Grammar

establish = 建立 to build something

e.g. My school was established in the year 1990.

If…then statement/sentence.

e.g. If this happen then something else happen.

e.g. If it’s Tuesday night at 5:00 PM then I have lessons.

e..g. If it’s Saturday then I do my homework.

What would it be like… = this did not happen..but we are imagining if it did happen what would it be like…

I don’t care about logos. To me, _______ is more improtant.

Henry is not influenced by the logos when he wants to buy something. He is influenced more by how something looks [appearance] and if it’s good for me [if it’s beneficial for me].

What clothes with logos do you wear and why?

I wear clothes with the Nike logo. I wear the Nike clothes because the logo is on the clothes.

Would you wear clothing with logos as big as the ones in the article?

I would not wear clothes with logos as big as the ones in the article because I think it looks ugly.

If you could choose between having a nice pair of shoes with no logo and having a Nike pair of shoes, but the Nike shoes are much more expensive….which one woul dyou choose and why?

I would choose a nice pair of shoes with no logo because it makes me comfortable. (Do you think the price is important?) if the shoes are both good, I will think price is important. If the shoes are both good [quality] then I think price is imporant.

Do your friends wear clothing with logos? Do you ever feel pressure to keep up with what students at your school are buying and wearing?

No, I don’t feel pressure because I think it doesn’t very it’s not very imporant; if we like something it is this is more important than the logo.

Based on this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I5V2tcg1BvQ that we watched together, Henry, write your opinion on this question: living on the moon would be difficult, dangerous and expensive, do you think humans should do this? Why or why not?

Henry’s Original

Yes, even though it would be difficult, dangerous and expensive, I think we should live on the moon because there will be more and more people live on the earth, and the earth become crowded. If we don’t lives on the moon then the earth will be full of people. Next, there many thing we need becme less and less, and maybe sometime in the future. We will use all of those things like water, energy, food and so on, they will disappeared on the earth. So we must lives on the moon to get the things we need. Third, the weather on the wearth become worse. Maybe sometime in the future the people can’t live on the earth. So we need to live on the moon.

Third, the weather on the earth is becoming/getting worse. Maybe sometime in the future [Maybe one day] the people can’t live on the earth — so we need to live on the moon.
