Vocabulary

shutting out / to shut out / to keep out / to stop something or someone from entering / shut the door / keep them out

e.g. Many people tried to come into the building but we closed the doors and shut them out.

e.g. The shut or closed the door to keep or shut them out.

handful / this is not too much – it’s a little amount – and it’s only so much that you can fit in your hand

e.g. I have a handful of change / coins.

pledged / to pledge / to promise to give something 

e.g. I pledged my loyalty to the United States.

e.g. Husband pledge their loyalty to their wives.

e.g. Some rich people pledge money to their favorite schools to help their children get in!

bar / to bar someone / barred (past tense) / to kick someone out of an organization and not let them come back in / also a place where you can drink alcohol – some restaurants have bars – but not all bars have restaurants

e.g. If you are in the Chinese embassy in America, you are actually on Chinese territory. The American police cannot come in to the Chinese embassy without permission.

intelligence-sharing / when two countries work together and share secrets that they learned about another country

e.g. Intelligence-sharing is a vital (重要) responsibility of countries.

instance / one particular time / a time that something happened once

e.g. In this particular instance (example/situation), Summer was correct.

e.g. American education is very poor for instance (for example), children in NYC cannot read well.

alleged / to allege / an allegation (N) / to accuse someone of a crime or wrongdoing – but it is not proven 100% true / I think and I say that you did something bad

biotoxin ricin / a very specific poison used to kill people and perhaps to kill spies

e.g. People alleged that President Putin had the spy murdered using biotoxin ricin.

Tunisian extremist 极端 / a man from Tunisia is a Tunisian / a person who takes their ideas “to the extreme” he believes them so strongly that he will kill other people who don’t believe the same thing / this is called “extremism” 极端 主义

e.g. In NZ recently, an extremist (person) killed many muslims with a gun.

e.g. Extremism (thing) is a problem all over the world because it usually ends in violence.

barrier / something that protects you from something / it’s something that you place in between you and a dangerous thing or situation / it’s like a wall / keeps things out / to block / 障碍

e.g. The children made a protective barrier around the camp site so no animals could enter.

participation / to participate / 参与 / to join and be actively involved in / not sitting on the side and doing nothing – it is engaging directly with people

e.g. The teacher was happy because all of the students were participating in class – raising their hands, and answering his questions. Classroom participation was very strong.

protocols / these are rules / 协议

e.g. When you operate a plane you must follow the protocols.

to underpin / to say again / to repeat / to add evidence or reason to something you said earlier

e.g. To underpin what I said before, we need to make sure we take care of Summer.

e.g. And I would just like to underpin what I said before, we are committed to helping Summer.

infrastructure / the country’s roads, bridges, tunnels, airports / any building that a country needs to run itself

commercial / relating to business – usually big business / a commercial is also the advertisement that plays during TV shows

malware / this is a virus on your computer / usually a bad person will put this application or program on your computer and you won’t know it – and he will secretly track what you are doing on your computer and can steal your information

sensors / these are machines or technology that alert you when something happens

e.g. The self-driving car has sensors in the front of the car that tell you when another car is too close. It can “sense” or “feel” the other cars.

execute / to not only think of a plan but to actually do it form beginning to end, step by step

e.g. Ideas are nothing without execution (noun).

e.g. If you want to become rich, you need to actually excute your ideas – you can’t just think about them.

innovating / to innovate / innovation (noun) / to think of a brand new way of doing something
