VIP Class Notes (Nicholas) [S]

Next Class Focus

I am correcting Mark live on the screen so he can see immediate correctiosn to his grammar and speaking.

Work on making our sentences longer with a structure…WHO DOES IT + WHAT ARE THEY DOING + WHY ARE THEY DOING IT

If you want to make your sentences longer, start with “yes or no”…+ (WHO) + (WHY YOU ARE DOING SOMETHING OR WHY YOU WANT THIS THING)…so you can try to add the word “because”.

For vocabulary, to have longer sentences, we should focus on VERB vocabulary.

How are you = What’s going on? (informal, for friends only) = What are you doing these days?

e.g. Oh nothing much…

Vocabulary

religious / religion 宗教

paid 支付

artist 艺术家= singer

e.g. Beyonce is a singing artist. There are other types of artists for example painters, sculptors, musicians.

popular æµè¡Œ — IF you are popular, this means, many people like you. You can ask “why is this person/thing/place popular?” For example (“for example” = “let me tell you…”), Sichuan is popular because of the pandas. Mark is popular with his friends because he is friendly. Nicholas is popular with Smart English students because he is a good teacher. Angela Baby is popular in China because she is very beautiful.

e.g. Sichuan is very popular for the panda zoo.

company / companiesÂ å…¬å¸ â€” this is the place, where you work, it is a big successful business.

e.g. What company do you work at?

advertisement (noun = thing) — You work at what type/kind of company? You work at an advertisement company.

e.g. I work in advertising. I work at an advertising/advertisement company.

e.g. I help businesses advertise in magazines, social media, television.

Grammar

I help (WHO = noun) (DO WHAT = verb) in (WHERE = place)?

Vocabulary

e.g. You advertise for some businesses.

Speaking exercise

Do you like the job?

Yes, I like the job + (WHY) because (REASON) it pays me well, (REASON) I have met new friends, and (REASON) I am learning new things.

Are you from Shanghai?

No, I am from Sichuan. Sichuan is very famous/popular for the pandas. I have lived in Shanghai for 1 year. Yes, I like Shanghai + because Shanghai is very good, for example: the food is very delicious, I am very popular — I have too many friends, and Shanghai has kind of workShanghai has lots of advertising work.

Speaking exercise

WHO + WHAT ARE THEY DOING + WHY ARE THEY DOING IT

For example: SUBJECT + VERB + “BECAUSE…”

For example: SUBJECT + VERB + BECAUSE = “FOR EXAMPLE…”

Katy Perry took home the top honors for 2018 on Forbes’ annual list of the highest-paid women in music.

The “Chained to the Rhythm†singer took in a whopping $83 million for the year starting June 1, 2017, beating out fellow powerhouses Taylor Swift ($80 million), Beyoncé ($60 million) and Pink ($52 million).

All the figures are pretax and are based on “Nielsen SoundScan, NPD BookScan, insider interviews and Forbes estimates,†according to the outlet. The magazine didn’t deduct fees from agents, lawyers and managers.

As Forbes pointed out, Perry nailed the No. 1 spot because her Witness world tour earned roughly $1 million a night and she raked in over $20 million for her role as a judge on “American Idol.â€

Pronunciation

Speaking exercise

What are your goals for this year? We read about female artists who are making a lot of money this year. For some people, their “goal” 目标 is to make lots of money. For other people, their goals are different. What are your goals?

Teacher Nichoals: My goals for this year…I have several (more than one) goals for example: I want to earn more money this year. Also, I want to improve my Chinese skills. Finally, I would like to travel to Europe.

I want to + (DO SOMETHING)

I want to + (DO SOMETHING)

I would like to + (DO SOMETHING)

Mark H: I want to improve my English, and this year I want to go to the beach for vacation. Finally, I would like to make more money.

Speaking exercise

What is your favorite Chinese holiday? OR What do you THINK is the most popular Chinese holiday? On this day, what does your family do?

In the Chinese New Year, I will celebrate 庆ç¥Â with family together at my home. My mom and my auntie cook lots of food. Children watch TV. My father and uncle maybe play mahjiang. Because when I was very young…during the Chinese New Year, I was given so much money. Old men will give children money on this day.

My questions that helped make your one sentence into many sentences were:

Where do you do this?

What do you do here?

Why do you like it?

Let’s practice this one more time…can you tell me when you first heard opera? What was it like? What did you feel? When did you decide you wanted to sing opera? What did your parents think about this?

I first heard opera when I was 17 years old. When I heard it, I felt so good. The operas singer was a boy…his voice was very wonderful and strong. When I heard it, I felt like I was in church. In university, at 18 years old, I go to [went] to a music university. Yeah, I’m very liked [liked it very much].

Teachers Note: The exercise above is very good for Mark to see his words live on the screen and to make correctiosn quickly.
