Vocabulary

Existential Crisis – A moment of supreme self doubt/life doubt

eg. When she went to Yale she had a minor existential crises.

Poignant – Sad, but in a touching way

eg. The movie had a very poignant ending, we were both crying.

Retrospect – To look back on

eg. I didn’t realize she was such bad girlfriend until I looked back in retrospective

Retroactive – something that applies backward in time

Meritocracy – A society based on individuals actions and strengths

eg. China is more of a meritocracy than the US.

Intriguing – Fascinating

eg. The piece of art was both simple and intriguing.

Gender income disparity – The difference between men and women salaries

Subtle – Not obvious

His flirtation was too subtle for her notice.

Pervasive – something that is everywhere

eg. The smog in Beijing is pervasive.

Two way street – Something that applies both ways

Taboo – Something that is not accepted by society

eg. Going to the movies by yourself is taboo in the US.

Grammar

Do not use “attractive” to mean interesting

ie. The movie sounds attractive.
