eg. She owns the pen.

eg. He owns many pencils.

detective: 侦探

lend: to give someone something for a short period of time 借出,借给

eg. He doesn’t want to lend you his bag.

eg. She’s not happy that you lended a piece of chocolate to her sister.

Grammar

Possessive nouns – who or what something belongs to

singular

Li’s book.

William’s pen

Travis’ pen – when nouns end with “s” , the is after the “s”

The girl’s kite is stuck in the tree.

plural

The girls’ kites are stuck in the tree. – more than one girl (is after the “s”)

Many families’ cars are white.

Possessive pronouns – what people or animals own

mine – if you are the speaker

yours – if you are talking to somebody

his/hers/its – another person

ours  – you and somebody

theirs – other people, animals or things

This bottle is mine.

That book is yours.

That’s his book.

The room is ours.

Those books are theirs.

Possessive determiners – who or what something belongs to

my – if you are the speaker

our – you and somebody

your – if you are talking to somebody

his/her/its – another person

their – other people, animals or things

The man puts his donkey in the shed

These are our seashells.

That is his pencil.
