Vocabulary

forbid: not allowed to do sth, especially officially 禁止,不许

eg. The law forbids the sale of cigarettes to people under 18.

eg. He is forbidden from leaving the country.

shade: 阴处;阴凉处

eg. There is no shade here so it is very hot.

curse: 诅咒,咒骂;骂人

eg. Stanley’s great-grandfather was supposedly cursed by a gypsy.

eg. Do you believe that some people are cursed?

descendants: people in your family that come after you

eg. He has no descendants.

eg. Some families have many descendants that are still living in the same village.

guilty: if you did do something bad and you are responsible for it eg. a crime

eg. He is guilty of murder.

eg. He is found not guilty and therefore, was released.

innocent: if you didn’t do it 无罪的

eg. Do you believe that he is innocent?

convict (v): to decide officially that someone is guilty 宣判…有罪,证明…有罪

eg. He has been convicted twice of robbery.

perseverance: to continue to do something despite encountering obstacles 不屈不挠,坚持不懈

eg. Having perseverance can get you very far in life.

make a fortune: make a lot of money

eg. His family made a fortune selling property.

rotten: 腐烂的;腐朽的;变质的

eg. The house smelled of rotten vegetables.

Grammar

present tense use – when telling a story of a film/book; talking about facts

eg. Camp Green Lake is not green and there is no lake.

simple past tense – if the action is completed

eg. Stanley’s family was rich.

Stanley was overweight he was always be left at in the school. He didn’t have any friends. He come from a poor family. His father is an inventor and his father is smart, but he is very unlucky. Although his father is very unlucky, he remain hopeful. He says, “he learned from failure.” He was trying to invent a way to recycle old sneakers.

Stanley’s great-grandfather was robbed by the outlaw Kissin Kate Barlow.
