Speaking exercise

what kinds of gifts would you buy for your friends’ birthdays?

When I was a student, I wrote a card for my friend’s birthday.  I thought she would like it, but now I think how can I do that. I think if we were students and we didn’t have a lot of money. we can just buy some cheap gifts or wrote a card. We should if its useful for your friend, and will she like it. For example, my best friend’s birthday is coming, and I think she likes to read and draw. So I think maybe I should buy her a set of pencils. She can use it to draw and also can use it to do her notes. If I buy something, she couldn’t use it even for one time, then it’s a useless gift.

When I was a student, I wrote a card for my friend’s birthday.  I thought she would like it, but now I think how could I have done that. I think if we were students and we didn’t have a lot of money. we could just buy some cheap gifts or write a card. We should think about if its useful for your friend, and will she like it. For example, my best friend’s birthday is coming, she likes to read and draw. So I think maybe I should buy her a set of colored pencils. She could use it to draw or to highlight the notes. If I buy something that she couldn’t even use for one time, then it’s a useless gift.

Reading

It is hard to generalize. I think it depends on what kind of person he or she is. If he or she is always trendy and up to date with the fashion, then a cool shirt may thrill him or her. But if he or she is into traveling, a book like a travel guide could also be a nice idea.

Writing exercise

I still remember the first meeting with my head teacher in college. My classmates and I were sitting in classroom waiting for having her first class. We had imagined many kinds of person she might be and we were excited to see her. However, we were all disappointed at that time when she came into the classroom in a ugly poker face. We couldn’t understand that how could she meet someone at the first time without even a smile. After getting along with her for a few days, I knew that she just doesn’t like to smile and she’s a good teacher. But I couldn’t have good feelings with her anymore, cause she already gave her first impression.

Generally speaking, first impressions are hard to change. But in my opinion, we shouldn’t let it affect us too much. If somebody knows that you value the first impression, he might pretend to be a good person to make you like him, and then you would never know how exactly he is. So don’t regard it as too important.

Revised

I still remember the first time I met my homeroom teacher in college. My classmates and I were sitting in classroom waiting for having her first class. We had imagined her with many kinds of personalities and we were excited to see her. However, we were all disappointed  when she came into the classroom with an ugly poker face. We couldn’t understand that how could she be so cold/ruthless with her students.. After knowing/hanging out with her for a few days, I knew that she just didn’t like to smile but she was a good teacher. Unfortunately I couldn’t have/develop good feelings for her anymore, because/ cuz  she already failed her first impression.

Generally speaking, first impressions are hard to change. But in my opinion, we shouldn’t let it affect us too much/ we shouldn’t judge people from the first impression. If somebody knows that you value the first impression, he might pretend to be a good person to make you like him, and then you would never know who he really is. So don’t emphasize/value first impression too much.Â
