We can be frightened for all kinds of reasons; some are logical, such as a fear of snakes which might bite you, but people can be frightened of all sorts of  things, many of them harmless: clowns, butterflies, clocks, moonlight. We call them phobias, and there are long lists of these phobias, most of them seemingly totally irrational.  However, not all fears can be classed as phobias, and we have lots of different words to describe fear, and even ways to describe the people who experience these feelings.

Thanks to the wonders of Facebook I have recently linked up with a friend I used to play with when I was about eight years old. The phrase ‘scaredy cat’ was often used as a playground jibe when I was very young. Bigger and older children might dare someone to do something  – such as climbing up on the bicycle shed and then jumping off into the coke pile – a really foolish thing to do as you would probably end up covered with coal dust and many scratches, and at worst you could break a leg.  So the sensible thing to do was to take no notice of such jibes, but not everyone felt able to stand up to the teasing.

Speaking exercise

I went back to my hometown in HangZhou. I spent two days with my family with CNY. After that, I went back to Shanghai on 4th February. I spent one day with my husband here, but he left to HK on the 5th. The 5th is the first day of CNY, I just did mistake, I booked my ticket for 6th, so I stayed alone in Shanghai. I watched two movies that day alone. Next day I flew to HK. I went to Hangzhou small fisherman village in HK, his twin brother work in HK. I loved this village very much, there was long food market, it didn’t cost expensive and many kinds of food. There’s least crowded than HK city. I met one of my French classmate in HK, she visited here with her cousin, it has been 4 years we didn’t meet each other. Then we talked a lot about other classmates, how they were. She knew more information than me, because she still has contacts with many classmates. I learned my makeup in South France, then after class I went to Paris, but she stayed there so she always talked with classmates.

I also met two other friends, I stayed 3 more days in HK than my husbands. So I was alone. One friend who comes from Czech, and another one come from Israel. I was very glad to meet new friends, both of them spoke English very well. They took me some place where very local, some good restaurants.
