ex: regardless of what my mother says, I always do what I want.

ex: “Lily you ate too much!” “I want to eat another ice-cream regardless”
ex: “I won’t be home until 11pm, it’s too late to see you” “I want to see you regardless”

Vocabulary

1.majority= most people 多数人
minority= less people 少数人
ex: The majority of the people in SH are non-locals.
ex: We need to respect the minorities in SH: Korean, Japanese.

2. mean= bad凶的 坏的
ex: you are so mean, stop taking away my food.
ex: She is a mean teacher, she yells at her students everyday.

3. interfere (verb)= 干涉
ex: Sorry for interfering the conversation, can I borrow Leo for 5 mins?
ex: My mom interfered my career decision.

4. assist (verb)= 辅助 help
assistant (noun)= 助手
ex: Zoe is Judy’s assistant, she helps her to arrange classes.
ex: can you assist me with this job?

5. single vote= one vote= 一个投票权
ex: each country has a single vote.
ex: I can vote in Canada but not in China.

6. opposite = 相反的
ex: I don’t like him because we are totally the opposite of each other.

Reading

The United Nations
Towards the end of World War II, representatives of 50 countries gathered in SF to work out the final text that would lay a foundation for international cooperation. This text later developed into the United Nations Charter. On October 24,1945, the United Nations officially came into existence after the UN Charter had been ratified by a majority of the original 51 Member States. The day is now celebrated each year around the world as United Nations Day.

The purpose of the UN is to bring all nations of the world together to work for peace and development, based on the principles of justice, human dignity and the well-being of all people. There are now over 190 members of the UN. They meet in the GA, which is the closest thing to a world parliament on earth. Each country, large or small, rich or poor, has a single vote. None of the decisions taken by the Assembly is binding. However, the Assembly’s decisions become resolutions that carry the weight of world governmental opinions.
