Jumbo the gigantic elephant. In the early 1880s. there was an enormous elephant named Jumbo. He was named by a zookeeper of the London Zoo after the Swahili word “jumbe” which means chief. Almost 100 000 children wrote to Queen Victoria to stop him from being sold. However Jumbo was sold to Barnum and Bailey Circus and became a star of their show, he was so huge that he could carry up to 100 children on his back at one time.

On one of his trip with Barnum and Bailey Circus, Jumbo was truck by a train in a accident. This happened on September 15, 1885 in St. Thomas, Ontario, Canada. At that time, Jumbo was trying to save the life of a young elephant named Tom Thumb, who had wandered near the train tracks. A life-sized statue of Jumbo was put up in St Thomas in 1985.
