When I was in college, there were 50% theoretical and 50% practical courses. The theoretical courses were about Art History 、The Artist Legend 、the theory of painting and design. The other courses were painting and design. We often had creative class, such as painting on the shoes or made a handicraft with a specific topic. Mostly we needed intuition to do that. But doing more practice was as important as intuition even though there was no principle for the Art.
