Precedent- Something that has happened before, and affects your views on the future.
E.g. He successfully won the case against that company, there is now a precedent on which to base our own case.
Self-defeating- When something you do stops yourself from achieving or completing some behavior or goal.
E.g. Whenever he writes an article, he is very self-defeating, he never thinks what he did is right.
