Writing exercise

Original

Smartphones have become an essential part of our lives and most of people cannot live without them. They are so commonly used that you cannot imagine how your lives would be if without them. It was the first time that I realized how much I relied on my smartphone when my phone it broke was broken last week.

I took my annual leave last Friday. When I was walking on the street in the morning, my phone suddenly stopped working and restarted repeatedly. I waited for a while but it still did not work. At that moment, my brain went blank because I did not know what to do without all the apps. I did not bring any cash or credit cards so I could not take any public transportation or grab a taxi to go home. What’s more, I did not even know where I could fix my phone because I could not search the place like I did on my phone. Luckily, I remembered that I had an extra company phone in my bag and I used up the last bit of battery to find the nearest Apple store. It took me an hour to walk to the place at noon and four hours to get my phone fixed.

After it, I started to think that although I benefit a lot from the efficiency and convenience smartphone brought bring, I was too so dependent on it that somehow I lost the capability to think proactively and handle my life well by myself.

Vocabulary

Narrative- Something like a story that has to do with someone’s own perspective.

e.g. I like writing in a narrative style because it’s less formal.

Geriatrics/Gerontology- The study of old people’s health and care.

e.g. If you go to a hospital and you walk into the geriatrics department, you will see many old people waiting for care.
