Republicans (gong he dang)- A political party in America

e.g. Donald Trump is the Republican leader.

Democrats (minzhudang)-A political party in America.

e.g. Hilary Clinton was a Democrat.

PRC People’s Republic of China- The full name of China as a country.

e.g. If you travel from the PRC to the USA, you will need a visa.

RoC Republic of China (Taiwan) The full name of Taiwan as a country.

e.g. If you have a RoC Visa, you cannot apply for a PRC visa

Lose vs Loose- Please don’t lose the money I gave you vs After my diet, all my clothes were very loose.

Diet- When you don’t eat certain things or only eat other things

.e.g. My diet is basically just vegetables and water.

Duration- How long something takes

e.g. I saw that many flights to Tokyo have a duration of 16 hours which I think is crazy!

Appealing-  Whether something makes you feel good or not.

e.g. I don’t think that food looks very appealing.

Fungus- (zhenjun) When we talk about xiang gang jiao or mushrooms (mo gu)

e.g. I think I got a fungal infection on my foot because it’s very itchy.

Overturn- Change things the opposite way that they were.

e.g. He overturned my decision to hire a new employee.

Flip-flops- The small shoes you wear on the beach that don’t cover your toes.

e.g. You can’t wear flip-flops to a nice restaurant.

Pharmacy- (yong dian) a place that sells medicines.

e.g. I went to buy some medicine at the pharmacy to stop my headache.

Referendum- When the citizens of a country vote on a big decision.

e.g. Recently, UK had a referendum to leave the Euro zone.
