Vocabulary

Gripped by- You are held by something or strongly affected by something.

Despair-  a feeling that describes having no hopes at all.

e.g. When I lost my passport and money, I was gripped by despair.

Turmoil- trouble, problems, woes.

e.g There is a lot of turmoil in Syria right now.

Drought- When the weather is too dry and everything dies.

e.g. If there is a drought, then it means there hasn’t been rain for a long time.

Institutions- zhi du a group or business, something organized.

e.g. There are many language institutions in Shanghai.

Isolating – gu li to stop someone or something from contacting others

e.g. If you do something really bad, they will isolate in prison.

Exemptions- To allow someone to do something even though there are rules

e.g. Trump gave Iran exemptions on the sanctions because they were doing what he wanted.

Affect VS Effect.

e.g. What is alcohol’s effect? It makes you drunk and being drunk affects the way you make decision.

Hardliner- qian ying pai people who are very strict or extreme in how they think.

e.g. Some people in the Iran government are hardliners, they think Iran should attack America.

Correspondent- reporter

e.g. There is at least one correspondent in every capital city.

Sweeping- to affect everything of something

e.g. There is sweeping change happening across the US right now.

Debilitating- Stops someone or something from functioning.

e.g. The pain was so bad, it was debilitating.

Disastrous- something that has a very bad effect on something.

e.g.  The earthquake had a disastrous effect on Sichuan in 2008

Reeling- Struggling, to be suffering.

e.g. Some parts of Sichuan are still reeling from the earthquake.

Shortages-  to have a small quantity  of something, not enough.

Rapidly-  quickly
