Hi Anna, I think your first try taking the toefl was pretty good. Your listening is much better than I would have expected. I recommend you do some of the listening and reading exercises at home and also prepare the writing part so we can correct next class. We will continue to do the speaking sections.

Vocabulary

Conform- to try and fit in, follow the rules and regulations of a society or group

e.g. Most people try to conform with everyone else in society.

Consensus- when multiple people come together and agree on something

e.g. My mother and I have a consensus; I will study an hour longer but in return, I can listen to music while I work.

Compromise- When you sacrifice something in return for something else, for something to happen.

e.g. North Korea compromised with the United States to stop building bombs in return for economic aid.

Inevitable- Something that can’t be stopped from happening.

e.g. Death is inevitable, so enjoy life while you can.

Explicit- something that is plain to see, something very obvious

e.g. That movie has explicit violence, it’s not good for kids.

Implicit- When you say something but try not to be too direct about it.

e.g. She told him, “it’s your decision, but remember you’re the one who’ll have to live with”. It was clearly an implicit threat.
