My first time that I went to Canada for business, I had lunch with 7 people at aĀ very formal restaurant. My friend and I were the only Koreans, theĀ others wereĀ Canadian. Some of them are my friendā€™s friends and some of them didnā€™t know each other well.
When we finished lunch, we called theĀ waiter forĀ our bill. Afterwards something strange happened. Except for me, everybody took their credit card out from their wallet and told the waiter/server inĀ turns how much theyĀ would pay. The waiter had to count/total their amount which took/spent aĀ lot of time. I hadĀ never seen that and thought it was so stupid. I felt uncomfortable because we had to sit and wait for the bill to be paid, it wasĀ such a long time.
Was this/thatĀ Canadian culture? I didn’t and I still don’t know and I didnā€™t ask about it.
Why wouldn’t one person be able to pay for everything instead of everyone paying individually/separately?
Now in China we use wechat, so itā€™s really convenient if you wanna go dutch.
In Korea we hardly/almost neverĀ go dutch, but if you oftenĀ like to go dutch in Korea, you will probably never make friends and you will eat alone.
