Emotion and passion is an important, but sometimes hard-to-find, balance in teaching. Can you actually be too passionate/care too much about students? Is it good to have a poker face sometimes?

Q: What kind of people cannot become school teachers? What kind of personality/characteristic hinders teaching performance?
A: I think everyone has the potential to become school teachers, but some people may need to work very hard to overcome some difficulties. For example, if  a person always has a poker face, the students may not like him. But if he can learn to be a good actor and show his love/emotion to his students, he might become a good teacher.

Also, if a person is introverted, which seems not suitable for a good teacher, he can change himself to be an extroverted person. Once he learns to open his heart to his students, he may be a successful teacher.  I think a teacher should be emotional. He should be very careful to detect the minor incidence in class. A teacher shouldn’t be overcomed by his emotions. He can use his heart to detect problems, but not use his emotion as a knife to hurt his students.

Q1: Will AI replace teachers?
A: No, I don’t think so. To answer this question, we should first understand some basic qualifications of teachers./two criteria to being a teacher. First, a teacher is a technician. That is to say, he should have some basic knowledge about both his major/field and teaching. Second, a teacher is like a half parent/similar to a parent/performs some of a parent’s duties. And what does every parent have for children? Love. Therefore a teacher is supposed to be a technician with love. But can an AI have both? No. AI can learn all the knowledge and techniques, but he can never learn ‘love’. Perhaps AI can mislead you to think that he loves you./may give you an impression of love and passion. But impression is never reality. When the student finds out that the AI is just a robot who’s indifferent about the individual students, he won’t believe in AI anymore, and may feel reluctant about learning from an AI.

Q2: Since human teachers have emotions, they may misbehave in class. When it comes to this aspect, do you still think AI can do better than human teachers?
A: Human teachers have emotions. They may get angry and beat their students. This has been a hot topic in China. But I think every coin has two sides. On the bright side, China has passed a law to prevent them from beating students. Teachers can punish their students to some extent, but it should not go too far. Also, school is like a minor society, if a student learns both good and evil in school, it will do them some good when they enter the society. At least they can learn to protect themselves. I also want to say that most teachers know what they should do in class. There are only a few teachers that don’t behave professionally. We should overthrow all human teachers only because of a small number of unqualified teachers.

AI can help teachers with some drudgery, like checking the students’ homework and exams. In class, AI can record the whole class so that teachers can analyze their teaching performance and get improved. AI can be both objective in clarifying each student’s weaknesses, and efficient in making a student-growth curve.
