Homework

Write a journal about what you did at school today. Be careful to use the past tense!
(Learned, ate, studied, played, etc.)

Practice your vocabulary from today. Draw a picture of some of the plants we talked about, and the sunshine that they love!

Vocabulary

Stinger – the pointy part of bee that can hurt you
e.g. When a bee is angry, it will try to get you with its stinger! (Be careful!)

Antenna – what a bee uses to smell
e.g. Bees use their antennae to smell and to tell how fast they are flying.

Courgette/Zucchini –  西葫芦

Pine Needles – some trees don’t have leaves, they have needles 松针

Moss – a plant that grows on rocks and trees where it is wet and dark 苔藓

Pot – what you put a plant in so that it can grow inside 盆
Flower Pot – 花盆
e.g. At home I have a tulip plant in a small pot. It makes my kitchen look very happy.

Goofy – not serious, funny and playful
Serious – studying hard, not playing, not funny

Petal – like soft, colorful leaves that make flowers beautiful

Attract – when something looks nice, and you want to go near it
e.g. Petals are colorful and smell nice to attract insects.
e.g. Bugs are attracted by lights at night.

Insect – a small animal with six legs 昆虫
e.g. A fly is a type of insect!

Shine – something that makes light
e.g. The lights in the office shine when you turn them on.

Sunshine – the light from the Sun 阳光
e.g. Sophie loves to go outside and play basketball in the sunshine.

Salt – something to put in food to make it taste better 盐
Black Pepper – something else you put in food 胡椒粉

Grammar

I play basketball in the night – I play basketball at night

When making a list, use “and” between the last two things.
e.g. I want to buy apples, oranges, and bananas.

Writing exercise

I like bees.

In spring, the days are getting warmer. Flowers are starting to bloom. The queen bees start laying eggs. The new bees begin flying. They collet netar from flowers. They make honey to eat. They live in hives.

Speaking exercise

Go to the school. Lot of things. Have English lesson. In the fruit shop. Peach, apple, pear, orange, banana. Chinese class. Spaghetti. I like to eat spaghetti.


Let’s make this into a story:

Sophie went to school today. I learned a lot of things. I had an English lesson. I learned about going to the fruit shop. In the fruit shop, they have: peaches, apples, pears, oranges, and bananas. I learned Chinese in Chinese class. I will eat spaghetti for dinner.

Pronunciation

Bloom – make sure to say an “l,” not a “w”

Flowering  – flao – er – ing

Soak – remember that “oa” makes a “long o” sound, like in “boat”
