Today’s Class Instructions

Exercise 1:

Weekly Question: For any and all students

In order to expose students to more complicated grammar on a regular basis we will ask them questions which use common, but difficult, sentence structures.

Have you ever    (Past Participle Verb)    +  (Object)  ?

Examples:

Have you ever seen snow?

Have you ever eaten shark meat?

Have you ever been to Beijing?

Explain to students:

Have done – means you did it before, but you do not usually say when

Exercise 2:

Listen and Spell

Focusing on spelling can give students a new perspective on words. They will start to understand spelling indicates pronunciation and differences in meaning.

  1. Play Hangman

Hangman is a great game to teach students about spelling. Take your time to explain the rules and draw the game on a whiteboard or piece of paper. After they have successfully guessed the word, make them take on the other role, and you will guess the word that they choose.

2. Pronounce a word clearly and slowly, let the student spell the word out. Make sure they write or type the word.

Examples:

Teacher Pronounces:    Traffic

Student Writes:  Taffek

Teacher Pronounces:   TAH, FEKK?    (Make sure to pronounce their spelling as you see it, so they will get that it’s not correct)

Student Writes: Traffek?

Teacher Pronounces: tra  f EHK?  (Put emphasis on the misspelled part of the word and ask them to try again)

Student Writes: Traffic.

Teacher: Traffic, great,   T R A F F I C.

(Make sure to introduce students how to spell words quickly also)
