Observe, Correct, Upgrade, Review
The SE method focuses on the student – topics that they need or interest them, and areas of their English that need improvement. This is determined when a student finishes their demo class with us, and a profile is created. We get them to speak and write, OBSERVE their mistakes and shortcomings, CORRECT their mistakes, and UPGRADE their vocabulary, and help them understand English grammar, sentences and logic. Then, we give them homework that lets them REVIEW what they have learned.

Beginner level, strong reliance on mother tongue Suggested teaching approach (All Levels) Chinese speaking English teacher to teach using step by step method, materials recommended, lots of review of past notes to solidify knowledge.
Lacks flexibility, simple vocabulary & sentences, requires slow speaking to communicate Suggested teaching approach Listening: Needs slow speaking, likely low vocabulary or severe pronunciation problems. Speaking: Needs conversation & speaking exercises to learn self correction and kill chinglish grammar. Pronunciation: Get student to slow read simple English articles with few or no new words & focus on mouth movements, especially AEIOU in most cases. Writing: Student to write simple diaries for HW – focus on sentence structure and grammar.
Can use English reliably in most familiar situations, speed is average, limited knowledge of synonyms, English is starting to be quite useful for the student – traveling using English is possible Suggested teaching approach Listening: Needs mid-speed speaking, encourage them to guess meaning, vocabulary or pronunciation needs work. Speaking: Needs to self correct during conversation, speaking exercises sometimes, focus on long sentences & the importance of English grammar (prepositions, conjunctions, tense) Pronunciation: Get student to read simple English articles with few or no new words & focus on mouth movements and connecting words like “I want to” becomes “I wantoo” Writing: Student to write set HW focusing on avoiding previous grammar & vocabulary mistakes
Can use English for work with some difficulty, few problems related to mother tongue, occasional grammar & vocabulary misuse, speed is high. Suggested teaching approach Listening: Fast speed speaking is OK, just needs more vocabulary, slang, expressions etc Speaking: Focus on student using synonyms to replace simple vocabulary, self correcting naturally, removing “how to say” etc to replace with natural connecting words and phrases Pronunciation: Focus on smooth speaking with no added sounds between words and all words connecting naturally. AEIOU should be distinct. Writing: Student to write HW using vocabulary learned in class. Upgrading vocabulary while correcting HW is useful here.
High level and flexibility, with some room for improvement and tweaking. Suggested teaching approach (All levels) Classes should be focused on student’s specific needs and they should be bringing things from work, life, or suggesting areas of focus. Open conversation with suggestions and corrections coming naturally from teacher is often preferred otherwise.
