Vocabulary

Terrorist Attack – when people attack to cause fear and hurt people

Idiom – a phrase, the meaning of which is usually not obvious from the words; a short version of a longer phrase that everyone knows 成语
e.g. The final straw; the straw that broke the camel’s back — if you keep adding small things, eventually these will be too heavy for the camel to carry; the final small difficulty which makes someone start to cry, or give up 压死骆驼的最后的一根草
e.g. Practice makes perfect

Camel – a big animal that lives in the desert, helpful for carrying things

Primary elections (the primaries) – when the political parties choose who will try to become President
e.g. Bernie Sanders lost to Hillary Clinton in the primaries, and then Hillary Clinton lost to Donald Trump in the general election.

Birth certificate / naturalization papers – how you become a US citizen; either you are born in the US or to a US citizen, or you have to apply to be made a citizen (naturalized)

Immigrant – someone who arrives in another country to live there permanently (or at least for a very long time)
e.g. If you move to the US to work, you are a “working immigrant”

Integrate – to join something, be a part of it, combine things
e.g. Integrating into life in a foreign country can be difficult for immigrants, especially if they are not comfortable with the local language.

Pronunciation

Embassy – MBC – NBC – be careful to distinguish “m” and “n”
— “M” is a lip sound, closing your mouth
— “N” is a tongue sound, touching the top up above your teeth (do not close you lips)
— Be especially careful with “NBC,” because “B” is a lip movement, so if you start the B too soon, it will change the “N” into an “M”
