(I have) No Idea! – when you really don’t know what is going on, what the answer is
e.g. Did you do well on the exam? No idea!
Multiple Choice – a type of exam question where you have more than two answers to choose from (usually four options, just one choice)
True or False – a question where you just choose yes or no, true or false
Unfounded – something without foundation, something without a reason
e.g. That was the only exam I cheated on, but it seems that my friend’s confidence was unfounded because that is the only class I failed in my whole college career.
Sciences – chemistry, physics, engineering
Liberal Arts – math, humanities, social sciences
Humanities – literature, languages
Social Science – economics, sociology, psychology
Fine Arts – music, painting, sculpture, drama
Clever – smart in a sort of speedy and creative way, quick with their brain, able to find solutions quickly
Intelligent – generally smart, not necessarily quick, but able to understand things well
e.g. Look at how quickly he solved that problem. He must be really clever.
e.g. He studies so many subjects and does well in all of them. He is quite intelligent.
Smart can be used in both of these cases; very general.
Exam(ination) vs. Test – the only difference is in the formality; “exam” or especially “examination” is more formal than test
Physical Exam(ination) – when you go to the doctor for a checkup
______ Test – when the doctor does a specific procedure to check for a specific condition
e.g. We have to do a blood test to see if you are healthy.
Customs Check – looking at your papers
Customs Search – looking inside of your bags, or on your person
Chaser – when you follow a drink of liquor (strong alcohol) with something that tastes nicer (usually something sweet); anything you eat or drink to get the taste of something else out of your mouth
e.g. After drinking that medicinal soup, we needed to “chase” it with something else, like bread.
Placebo Effect – when you have a medical effect just because you think that you’re doing something healthy
e.g. Sometimes if you have a headache and take a fake pill, you will still feel better just because you expect to.
