Writing exercise

I have been in Shanghai almost for three months and I would like to write my first impressions from living in this totally different country (for me). I came here to study mandarin with feeling that mandarin is the common language and that Chinese people are the same – I was wrong! It’s the same how Chinese people see us. There are a lot of ethnic groups here and also a lot of dialects. What I will never get used to do it, it’s spitting in the street or on the subway. Many times I could hear very strong sound with the (achieving) goal, that nothing has been stayed in the breathing canals. Also yawning and coughing without covering our mouth with the hand is something new for me. But on the other side I realized, that is very difficult to see an angry face here – even though I don’t speak Chinese, smile, willingness to help and looking at you so … are stronger than in other countries.

I have been in Shanghai for almost three months and I would like to write about my first impressions from living in this totally different country. I came here to study Mandarin with the feeling that Mandarin is the common language and that Chinese people are the same – I was wrong! It’s the same with how Chinese people see us. There are a lot of ethnic groups here and so a lot of dialects. What I will never get used to is spitting in/on the streets or on the subways.

There were many times I could hear people hocking loogies. (native)

There were numerous times I could hear people coughing and clearing their throats in public. For me, this is absolutely disgusting.

Also yawning and coughing without covering our mouths with our hands is something new for me. But on the other side I realized, that it is very difficult to see an angry face here – even though I don’t speak Chinese, they/the locals smile, are willing to help and stare/gaze at you. These actions or behaviours are stronger than in other countries. I have never experienced/seen/witnessed something like this.
