Vocabulary

Differentiate – make yourself different from other people. (e.g. You need to think hard about how you will differentiate yourself from the other job applicants.)

Applicant – someone who applies for something (e.g. When I arrived at the office I was surprised to see so many applicants trying to get the job position.)

Industry – a particular group of businesses that are similar. (e.g. I have worked for many different companies in the entertainment industry: dance studios, clubs, bars, agencies and so on.)

Propa (pr-o-pa) – English slang for the word proper, meaning something is correct or good. (e.g. This is what I call a propa cup of tea.)

I have liked the entertainment industry my whole life because my mum is such a good singer and she inspires me so much. When I was in high-school, one of my friends introduced me to hip hop, street and jazz dance. I was totally attracted to dance so I started learning hip hop and jazz and continued for a really long time. Then finished high-school, my mum and I decided to go to a music college in Xi’an. My mum knows me and that I love singing so I started learning to sing in college for 4 years. After I graduated, I felt that Xi’an definitely couldn’t satisfy me so I decided to come to Shanghai to improve my skills. Now I have been in Shanghai improving my skills for 1 year so now I’m starting my new life in the entertainment industry.
