A special meal
Twenty years after I was born, I first cooked for my parents. Since I am the only child in my family, I am not asked to do too much housework. Every time I volunteered to cook, my parents would reply, “We just want you to study hard. You’ll learn how to cook when it’s necessary.” So twenty years later when I first made a meal for my parents, I felt both nervous and proud. I made three delicacies: braised ribs, cucumbers in sauce, stir-fried cabbages(pak choi). Which do you think is the most difficult one? Ribs? But the braised ribs was successful! Actually I nailed the first two dishes, but was defeated by the cabbages. As I had never dealt with cabbages before, I didn’t think of chopping them and separating the upper soft part with/from the lower hard part. I peeled off the cabbages and threw them altogether into the pan. Now you could imagine how my parents looked when they saw the whole cabbage on the plate. Haha! The green leaves were over-boiled but the white parts were under-cooked. However, the biggest challenge was how to eat them, since the whole cabbage was too large for a bowl! Luckily the first two dishes saved the meal and saved us all!
