Vocabulary
Hierarchy (n): 1- a system in which people or things are arranged according to their importance:
E.g.: Some monkeys have a very complex social hierarchy.
E.g.: He rose quickly through the political hierarchy to become party leader.
Hierarchical (adj): 1- arranged according to people’s or things’ level of importance, or relating to such a system:
E.g.: The military has a hierarchical rank structure.
E.g.: It’s a very hierarchical organization in which everyone’s status is clearly defined.
E.g.: Chinese companies tend to be very hierarchical.
Umbrella Organization (n): 1- an organization that controls or organizes the activities of several other organizations, all of which have a similar purpose.
E.g.: The council is the umbrella organization representing about 20,000 tradespeople in the Pittsburgh region.
Hostile (adj): 1- unfriendly and not liking something. 2- difficult or not suitable for living or growing:
E.g.: The president had a hostile reception in Ohio this morning.
E.g.: The hostile weather conditions made it hard for the bird to fly.
