Vocabulary

Unique – when nothing else is like something; it is not like anything else
e.g. People from New York like to say that it is a unique city.

Comedian – someone who tells jokes to make money
e.g. The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is a show about a female comedian.

Open-Mic – when comedians or musicians can go on stage for free and practice playing or telling jokes; the microphone is “open” for anyone to use
e.g. People who want to be comedians often go to open-mics to try their jokes and see if anyone will laugh!

“Mic” – microphone; something you talk into to make your voice louder

Turkey – 火鸡

Nutrients – things that are good for you from food or drinks
e.g. When you are eating hotpot, the pot is always boiling, and so the vegetables can lose their nutrients.

Burn – the feeling of spiciness, like in hotpot
e.g. When I eat too much hotpot, it makes my tongue burn!
e.g. My tongue is burning! These peppers are hot!

Mild, Medium, Hot/Spicy (Very Spicy, Extremely Spicy…) – 微辣，中辣，重辣,   (爆辣)

Chemical – when you make flavors or medicine using chemistry
e.g. This

Addicted – when someone really, really wants to do something, eat something, or drink something; when they will go crazy if they don’t
e.g. We were almost addicted to a type of snack when we were young. Maybe they were special chemicals…

Put on a happy face – to go out and have fun; pretend to be happy when you are not happy (usually you need to use “just”)
e.g. With the holidays approaching, we all put on a happy face to go out shopping.
e.g. His friends were coming over, so though he was sad, he just put on a happy face.

Out of work – when you don’t have any more work
e.g. Do you have anything for me today? No, for now are out of work.
Out of a job – when you don’t have a position, a job
e.g. John will be available later because right now he is out of a job.
e.g. The factory closed last week, so know Mark is out of a job.

Chinese New Year are coming soon; everybody looks a happiness face on the street. Because CNY is the most important traditional festival in China. Many people out of work for a good salary and they just take a little break during CNY. People needs some special day to connect with their family, and let them keep go on. It’s a normal thing in China.

I am not Shanghai people; I need go back to my hometown in CNY. But I am married. My husband wants to stay at Shanghai. It’s hard to balance two family’s interest.
