What kind of activities does your daughter like to do?

Vocabulary

Sport vs. activity – a sport is a game you play, using your body, usually with other people; an activity is something you do for fun, usually not to win
e.g. Riding a bike is a sport; golf is a sport; soccer is a sport.
e.g. Riding a scooter is usually an activity that you just do for fun.

Afterwards – to show that one thing comes after another; used in almost the same way as “after”
e.g. We went to the mall to go shopping, and afterwards we had dinner together.

Once – used to show that you start doing something right when you reach some point in time, or when something else ends
e.g. Once you are sixteen years old, you can drive in the United States.
e.g. Once you are done eating, we can get on the bus home.

Surround vs. Go around – “surround” is to be on all sides of something
— to “go around” is to move around the outside of something; movement or motion of one thing around another
e.g. The fence surrounds my land so that my cows cannot escape (this tells us where the fence is).
e.g. There was a hole in the middle of road, so we had to go carefully around it so that we didn’t damage our car (we are moving to the side of it to get past).
e.g. We ran three times around the field for exercise this afternoon.

Strategy – a specific plan for doing something, how you want to do it
Technique – a way to do a specific thing
Style – the way you do something, how you look when you do it
e.g. We are developing a marketing strategy for this new product (we need a big plan to try to sell this to many people).
e.g. Let me show you a technique for practicing pronouncing the letter “L”
e.g. We are going to cook these vegetable in a Chinese style (we will cook them like someone might do in China).

AI – artificial intelligence; a computer that is able to solve problems usually solved by people
e.g. AI can now beat humans at games like Go and Chess.
VR – virtual reality; when you can see and hear a world that is not real, like in a game; the whole world is fake
e.g. Now you can play games where you wear a special headset (like a closed hat with glasses) and you really feel like you are living inside of a game.
AR – augmented reality; when you can see the real world, but a computer puts something there which does not actually exist; the computer adds thing to the real world
e.g. This new game can put treasure in different parts of my house so that I can go find them (you wear some glasses that show you things that aren’t there).

Augment – to make bigger or to add something to something else

Rollerskates / Rollerblades – shoes with wheels on them
— The difference is that rollerskates have one wheel on each of four corners.
— Rollerblades have all four wheels in a line down the middle of the shoe.

The weather is good. It was sunny in this weekend. I went to the park with my son and my daughter. My son rode a bicycle and my daughter had another sport and we had a good time.
