Homework

What are the differences between English learning for your parents, for you, and for you kids? How do the different tools and the globalization of culture affect your daughter’s ability to develop near-native fluency in English?

Vocabulary

Semi-annual – every half a year; twice a year
e.g. I am very busy now with our semi-annual investors’ report giving our forecast for investments in these sectors for the next six months.
Biennial – one time every two years
CAREFUL using the word “biannual,” because people often confuse this word BOTH for semi-annual and biennial. Thus, it can mean either twice a year OR once every two years, and can be confusing.

Within vs. During – “within” is a time period that limits an activity; “during” is one activity limiting another activity

Register – how formal a sentence is, even though it can express the same meaning
e.g. Benediction vs. Toast

Sleep late vs. Get up late – “sleep late” is more about some situation that caused you to sleep later; “get up late” is more about a choice to stay in bed longer
e.g. Last night I was at work very late, so I (accidentally) slept late this morning.
e.g. Last night I was at work very late, so I got up an hour later than usual (I really planned to do this).

Grammar

Usually it has lot of pages – Usually it is very long

With our semi-annual investors’ report which gives vs. giving
— Both of these versions of the example sentence for “semi-annual” have the same meaning. The only difference is that when you use “which” you can use the verb with a subject afterwards (which gives), but without a conjunction like “which, that, because, but…” we cannot use a form that has a subject (giving).

Today I slept very late vs. Today I went to sleep very late
— The first means that you got up late today (you “slept in”), you slept until later than usual, you slept too long (6am –> 7am)
— The second means that you got in bed or fell asleep later than usual (10pm –> 11pm)

Speaking exercise

I’m very busy this week. Last night I slept very late. Do my job, some paperwork. I have to prepare for meeting, for roadshow for my client. Therefore, I have to prepare some materials and do some paperwork and prepare a powerpoint. About my recent views about my sectors, about the stocks which I covered. Not so good. The index is flat on the first half of this year, but the price of some stocks goes up very quickly. So those are my suggestions. I would like to upgrade the information about those stocks with my clients. The management, the sales of their products, and the financial informations. That’s all key informations for investing. That’s what the investor care about. I have to follow a lot of news nearly every day about the companies, and I collect the key information from those news and if they are related about/to their profit or revenue, which means will also related to the stock price, then I updated the new information to my clients.
