While you are in Singapore, think about what you like about their coffee. What makes it different? Take a look at this “coffee glossary” to find some terms to describe the differences, or read a review of some coffee and see if you can understand what the coffee tastes like:

Vocabulary

Array – a set of options, possibilities
e.g. We have an array of lunch options today, including chicken, salad, and pasta.

As long as – for some amount of time, during the time that something is true
e.g. They will invest in any industry as long as they can make money (as soon as they cannot make money here, they will take their money somewhere else)

Bund – the area in Shanghai on the Huangpu River, with the old buildings on one side, and the new buildings on the other (Puxi and Pudong) 外滩

Tripod – something with three feet, like for putting a camera on, or the bottom of the Pearl Tower (东方明珠)
— “Tri” means three, and “pod” means foot, from Greek; BUT “iPod” does not have the same history! I believe that this stands for “I portable on demand,” meaning that you can put your own music on the device and listen to it whenever you want to

Rich – when you are talking about food or drinks, it usually means that something has fat in it; milk, meat, oil
e.g. Coffee in Singapore is richer because they use more milk/cream in it.

Glossary – a list of words used in a type of situation, or in a single book, on a topic, etc.; like a limited dictionary
e.g. In the homework, take a look at the coffee glossary and find some interesting terms.

Grammar

When you are translating “X国人” there is usually an adjective form that we like to use in English.
e.g. 美国人 = American (not America people or American people)
e.g. 法国人 = French (not France people or French people)

For with time
— “For” is used to talk about a period of time
e.g. I will be in Singapore for three days.
e.g. I was just in the United States for a week.
e.g. I have been in China for almost two years.

In, on, at with time
— “In” is for large periods of time
e.g. Millennia (1000 years), Centuries (100 years), Decades (10 years), Years, Months
BUT, also for parts of the day
e.g. In the morning, in the afternoon, in the evening
— “On” for days and weekends (also dates)
e.g. On Tuesday, On the weekend, On the 6th of May
— “At” is for specific times AND for nighttime
e.g. At six o’clock, at 7:52am, at noon, at night

I have been to Shanghai for so many times – don’t use “for”
— When you want to express how many times you have done something, no need to use “for”
