Vocabulary

May Day – 五一节

Major – what you are studying at school
e.g. Nick’s major is politics.
e.g. Cassie’s major was accounting.
Majority – more than half of something
e.g. The majority of people support traffic laws.
e.g. We have already eaten the majority of the cake.

Silicon Valley – 硅谷
the Bay Area – San Francisco and the cities around the water there

Speak out – this is a phrasal verb, so adding “out” changes the meaning; this means to make yourself be heard, especially if you want to express disagreement
e.g. We need to speak out against the actions of the police in this case.

Grammar

-ous – this is a common form for making adjectives
e.g. population –> populous
e.g. number –> numerous

There will be very crowded – there will be a lot of people there / it will be very crowded there
— We need to distinguish here between the phrasal verb “there is” and the use of “there” for location

Review “in, on, at” for time
— In is for very large time periods: Millennium (1000 years), Century (100 years), Decade (10 years), Year, Month
e.g. In the first millennium (from year 1 to year 1000)
e.g. In the 1960’s (this decade from 1960 – 1969)
e.g. In July (during the month)
— ALSO, use “in” for parts of the day
e.g. in the afternoon, in the morning, in the evening (BUT, “at night”)
— On for days and dates as well as the weekend
e.g. on Tuesday, on the 6th of April, on the weekend
— At use at for very specific times, and for “night”
e.g. At 6 o’clock, at 7:01, at night
— BUT, usually we don’t use a preposition for things relating to weeks
e.g. this week, next week, in the week of April 5th…

Back – this is not usually a verb like 回, but a preposition that shows that a verb is directed to the beginning

Actually, I don’t like this holiday arrangement. I feel very tired when I get back to work on this Sunday. Although I can take a four-day break, but follow that I will have a long working week for six days. There are several satellite cities in China, the super-big cities, like SH, BJ, GZ, SZ. There are people from all the other areas in China come to these satellite cities for work.

Actually, I don’t like this holiday arrangement. I feel very tired when I get back to work on/this Sunday.
