Vocabulary

Fireworks – small rockets you shoot into the sky for celebrations; sometimes they are just nice colors, sometimes they explode and make nice shapes or loud sounds
e.g. I saw for National Holiday that fireworks were shot into the sky over Tiananmen Square in the shape of the number 70.

Loud – a big sound
e.g. The fireworks in Beijing were very loud.

Harvest – to go out into the fields and bring in the food that you grew (v); also, the food that you grew that year (n)
e.g. All around the world you can see Harvest Festivals between September and November, e.g. 中秋节, Oktoberfest, Thanksgiving

Next-Door – the building right next to another (literally, the next door to the East, West, etc. from the door to this building)
e.g. They were shooting fireworks from the building right next-door to ours.
— I think that “beside” is closer and is not usually used for buildings.

Flyover – when a plane flies over a city, an event, or a target, usually at low altitude (height)
Altitude – height for flying things
e.g. There was a fighter in doing flyovers in Melbourne around the time of the surprise fireworks show.

Formation – when you have many people doing something together in a shape
e.g. The Blue Angels are a group of Navy fighter pilots who fly in very tight formations.
Shape – the arrangement of many things
e.g. The planes’ flying formation is a large triangle.
e.g. The marching band made a formation in the shape of a skull and crossbones.
— The “formation” is the organization of parts; the “shape” describes the whole thing made by the parts.

When we walked around the streets at night, suddenly *BOOM* – When/as we were walking around the streets at night
— To show an interrupting action, use -ing + past tense
e.g. I was reading when suddenly I heard a very loud noise and ran outside to see what was happening.
