What are the differences between English learning for your parents, for you, and for you kids? How do the different tools and the globalization of culture affect your daughter’s ability to develop near-native fluency in English?

Vocabulary

Bar Exam – the test to become a lawyer in a state; licensing exam
e.g. Nick is studying for the New York bar exam.

Accent – a different way of pronouncing words
e.g. Canadians have a very different accent from Texans.

Prize – what you get because you win
Place – where you finished relative to other people in a competition
e.g. I got first place in the competition and that came with a prize of $100.

Recite – 背诵
Memorize – to have something in your head so that you don’t need to use notes to repeat it
e.g. My daughter had to memorize a speech for an English competition (she had to recite the speech without notes).

Grammar

North people 北方人 – northerners
— In the US, we divide people generally in “northerners” and “southerners”

My daughter have learned English – has / has been learning English

Very frequently than me – more frequently than me / more fluently than me
