Homework

While you are in Singapore, think about what you like about their coffee. What makes it different? Take a look at this “coffee glossary” to find some terms to describe the differences, or read a review of some coffee and see if you can understand what the coffee tastes like:

Vocabulary

Book (verb) – to make an appointment for something, like an English class
e.g. Jesse is a great teacher, but his class is very hard to book!

Dreadlocks – the kind of hair that Jesse has

Originate – to have a beginning somewhere, or at some point in time
e.g. I don’t know where dreadlocks originated, but they are cool!

Black Coffee – coffee without cream or sugar
e.g. I don’t usually like black coffee that much because it’s too bitter.

Dangerously Good – so good that you won’t be able to stop eating it; like a drug, so that you become fat and unhealthy
e.g. I don’t even like coffee that much, but these dark-chocolate-covered coffee beans are DANGEROUSLY good!

Wired – when you have so much energy that it’s like you are connected to an electric current; like electricity is running through you, probably because because of some drug, like caffeine or cocaine
e.g.

大麻 – Marijuana, Cannabis, Weed

Edible – something that you can eat; also, something you can eat that has marijuana in it
e.g. This kind of mushroom is edible (it will not hurt you to eat it)
e.g. Smoking weed is very smelly, so some people prefer edibles, like cookies.

Job Approval – do other people think that you are doing well in your position; are you doing what you should and are you good at it?
e.g. Trump’s job approval rating has been negative for a long time.

Negative – less than zero

Surge – an unexpected, sudden rise
e.g. The price of Bitcoin has surged recently with the news of an intensifying trade war between the US and China.

the Midwest – a region of the United States around Chicago

Economy (noun) – the relationships of buying and selling in an area
Economics (noun) – the study of buying and selling in a system (macro); management of money within an organization (micro)
e.g. The economy is taking a hit (being harmed) because of the trade war. We are expecting difficult times ahead.
e.g. My friend studied economics at the University of Chicago.
Economic (adj) – something that doesn’t cost a lot of money, something that is efficient; something related to economics
e.g. We are trying to be economic with our purchases this year, as we are expecting that the economy will be more difficult.
e.g. This new economic study says that if the trade war doesn’t end soon, it will be bad for everyone.

Grammar

— Drink, drank, drunk

Singapore is located in the South of China – to the south of China
— “In the south of” means inside, but near the south (like 广东)
— “To the south of” means that it is outside and further south (like the Philippines or Indonesia)
