Vocabulary

Baking dish/pan – a ceramic product used in the oven for making bread and other food
e.g. Tony recently inspected some baking pans in Chaozhou.

Tart/Pie – some thin bread with fruit on top and then more bread, baked in a dish in the oven
e.g. Tony’s company makes tart dishes for baking pies.
e.g. My favorite pie is a blueberry (蓝莓) pie.

Loaf – a way to measure large pieces of bread
e.g. Tony’s company sells loaf pans, which are for baking a whole loaf of bread.
e.g. A loaf of bread has 20 slices (片?) in it, which can be used to make sandwiches (三明治).

Grammar

When talking about the time needed to do something, we use take not be.
e.g. It takes fourteen hours to fly from Chicago to Shanghai.

When we talk about the length of time we want to do something, we use for.
e.g. I will play football with my son for three hours tomorrow!
e.g. My son studies for three hours every night.

When we talk about how much, we should use the word have.
e.g. I have three apples.
e.g. My son has too much homework every night. He can’t go to bed until 10:30 pm.

Speaking exercise

The traveling is good. It is about six hours. By train. If by high-speed train, maybe we are two hours. In there are two types of train: high-speed train and ordinary train. (How long have you been in Hunan?) Maybe one week. (Having you been playing soccer with your son?) Maybe too much! Maybe again next Sunday or Saturday. Last week he in school. He already finished his homework.


Now, use those sentences to make a story about going home, and what you do at home with your son:

Yesterday, I went to Hunan by ordinary train. It took about six hours. Generally speaking, the train was good. Usually there are two types of train in China: high-speed train and ordinary train.
