Homework

Use some of the vocabulary from today in some writing. Choose a topic that lets you use the words we learned.

Vocabulary

Plant – to put something in the ground so that it can grow
e.g. I want to plant some roses.

Fruit – anything that grows on a plant that you can eat; usually something soft with seeds
e.g. An apple is a fruit, but so is a tomato.
Fruit Salad – when you combine many types of fruit in a bowl and eat them all together; often this can include: strawberries, kiwi, blueberries, mango, grapes, mandarin oranges, banana

Cherry Tomato – a small, sweet tomato that is tasty in salads or even by itself

Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit; wisdom is not putting tomato in fruit salad
— Though science would tell you that a tomato is a fruit, experience tells you that in cooking it is used as a vegetable; it wouldn’t taste so good in a fruit salad.

Knowledge – knowing lots of things, information
Wisdom – knowing how to use knowledge, having experience

Bell Pepper – a pepper that is bigger and not spicy, comes in green, red, and yellow 青椒

Fajita – bell pepper, onion, and meat that is stir-fried and served in a hot iron pan; at your table you put it in a tortilla (墨西哥并) with other ingredients like cheese


Cuisine – a certain style of food, usually related to some country or region
e.g. Mexican cuisine is

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs – 天降美食
— Usually “cloudy with a chance of” would have “rain” or “sun” to talk about the weather, but here it has a food, which is very strange

Bug – any small creature that lives on land, worms, insects, spider, flies, etc. 虫
Worm – soft bugs with no legs, sort of like a snake
Insect – a bug with six legs
Fly – type of flying insect
Spider – a bug with eight legs

Bat – like a flying mouse that eats flies and mosquitoes 蝙蝠

Barely – about ability, only if you try really hard can you do something
Rarely – about frequency, how often do you do something
e.g. I can barely see the mosquitoes (maybe it’s really dark, and so I can’t see something as small as a mosquito)
e.g. I rarely saw mosquitoes in Jing’an (only a few times a week did I see mosquitoes, or almost never)

蚊帐 – Mosquito net – something that you can hang over your bed so that mosquitoes can’t get close enough to bite you

Starve – to die or become sick from not having food; to be very hungry 饿死

Let – when someone who has the power to stop another person from doing something does not stop them from doing something that they want to do; the other person wants to do something
Make – to cause something to happen, especially something that the the person doesn’t want to do
e.g. After showing his school ID, the guard let the student into campus.
e.g. The Mom made her son eat the broccoli.

Thesis – a long paper you write to graduate with a Master’s degree 论文
e.g. In the morning I work on my thesis, and in the afternoon I teach English.

I want to put some rose in the ground – I want to plant roses / a rose

I want them to grows all my yard – I want them to grow all over my yard / everywhere in my yard

They banished the island to keep alive – they banished the machine from the island to stay alive

The most bugs I hate – The bug I hate the most

I barely can see mosquitoes – I rarely see mosquitoes

It will let you sleep/sleepy like a baby – it will help you sleep like a baby

My office is in the west – my office is on the west side
