Homework

Do a (or a few) of the IELTS writing exercises to review next class.

Vocabulary

Current – related to right now
e.g. My current house is a bit too small. Before the baby comes we need to move to a larger house.
e.g. My current job is very interesting.

Compact Kitchen – compact means efficient use of space, something that doesn’t take up a lot of space, is small but not worse; a compact kitchen is small, but it isn’t harder to use, it still has everything you need to do basic cooking

Commercial Kitchen – a large kitchen with all the specialized things that a restaurant might need

Texture – how something feels when you touch or eat it
e.g. This sidewalk is rough (it’s texture is rough).
e.g. The texture is light and moist (not dry).

Tender/Tough – not too hard when you chew it/dry and hard to chew
e.g. This steak is tender and pink–the perfect texture!
e.g. This steak is much too tough. It was cooked longer than it should have been.

Fusion/cultural exchange – fusion is when you mix two cultures or two styles
e.g. This restaurant is a Korean-Mexican mix.
Cultural exchange is when you learn about another culture.
e.g. I like to travel because I like to learn about other cultures. I like to engage in cultural exchange.

Confirmation/Reservation number – the number attached to your reservation which you can give to the hotel reception to help find your reservation

Light on fire/catch fire – to begin to burn
e.g. The hairdryer caught on fire and burned Luna’s hand.
e.g. The tree lit on fire when the lightning hit it.

Burned – when something is hurt because of too much heat
e.g. The hairdryer burned Luna’s hand.

Concrete – (adj) something that you can see or put into numbers (opp. of abstract); we know what we are doing or why we are doing it
e.g. Philosophy is abstract, but accounting is concrete.

Grammar

Pick up vs. Pick out – pick up is to go somewhere and get something; pick out is to choose from some options

Most priority – a/highest priority

Another one hour – after another hour

Is immediately on fire – catch/light on fire
— “Is” talks about a state, what is true right now. “Catch” or “light” is expressing a change.

They gaved me – gave

Some of them vs. some people – “them” is specific and concrete (we know exactly who they are); “people” is general
e.g. There was a large group of people, and some of them were carrying cameras.
